Creating 3D animations for Ocean OS as an Innovation Design Intern
What:
3D Visualisation, Animation and Storytelling
Who:
Ocean OS
When:
2024
Context:
Ocean OS, an ocean startup on a mission to make marine biodiversity monitoring more accessible, needed compelling, high-quality visuals to communicate its mission in marketing materials, presentations and stakeholder meetings.
Outcome:
A series of short animated films that capture Ocean OS’ vision and explain their technology clearly. The films highlight how in-situ data can be transformed into actionable biodiversity insights using machine learning.
My Role:
I worked collaboratively with the founding team and operational partners to 3D model the technical aspects of Ocean OS’ monitoring systems. I then used animation and simulation techniques in Blender and Unreal Engine to create the films.
The film above communicates how Ocean OS sends onsite data via cellular to the cloud and then processes the data with machine learning to create usable biodiversity-related metrics.
The final film above demonstrates how Ocean OS can also use satellite scanning data to create detailed and widespread observations of a large body of water.
I later created 2 renders of Ocean OS’ long-term marine mammal monitoring system (left) and their long-term biodiversity monitoring lander (right).
